Creative Zen X-Fi 16 GB Video MP3 Player with Wireless LAN and Built-In Speaker (Black/Silver) Customer Review

I've owned some of the best there is: Zune HD 16 GB Video MP3 Player (Black), Apple iPod touch 8 GB (3rd Generation) NEWEST MODEL, and now this one. I can safely say that one is really not "better" than the other - it's all a matter of what you intend to do with the device. When you boil it down to its core, you need to find out exactly what you want - and then get that device, even if it's not necessarily the most 'popular' of them all.

I'd been using my Blackberry Storm as a media player. For the record I only needed such a device to funnel audio out to my car as my current car does not have iPod or other inputs, nor does it have USB or flash inputs. That only leaves me with Line In - opens up the possibilities, limits the coolness. I don't watch videos on the go except on my netbook, so I don't need a small video player. I don't use it as a picture device; the Storm can handle that. Same for a voice recorder. I only need it for music. The problem with the iPod Touch is that it's essentially a toy: a device that you can play with all day and lets you do whatever you want without having to carry multiple devices; yet it doesn't really do any one thing all that well. The Zune HD is a music and video player, and it excels in music management, but it suffers from (A) a price that's a bit iffy for the size, and (B) proprietary connectors and software that are turnoffs for someone on the move like myself, not to mention (C) issues with Wi-Fi that I've spoken to in my other review.

Enter the Creative Zen X-Fi. On Black Friday I decided to buy a media player, and it was going to be one of the aforementioned three. I settled on the X-Fi because it seemed to offer everything I needed: A way to get a bunch of music portable and accessible with a reasonable price point, in an attractive form factor. It's already more than proven it's up to the task, being able to continuously play music on a 10 hour drive and still have more than 3/4ths power remaining. The audio quality is comparable to what I would get playing the music from an MP3 CD, which is about what I expected to get. It also has a built-in speaker, and others have commented that the speaker quality sucks. I don't agree. If X-Fi is on, the speaker sounds quite robust to be so small (which makes you wonder why they can't use the same technology in cell phone speakers). It's not going to rock a party, but it's more than sufficient to have sitting by your desk to play some music without earphones. I did have some issues which I will speak to, but for now I'm satisfied with the device on the whole. I find it to be worth the price I paid.

=- What the Zen X-Fi Does RIGHT -=

- Small form factor, easy to carry, easy to obscure
- Attractive design
- Most attractive packaging I've ever seen
- Uses standard mini USB to communicate, sync and charge
- Support for connecting to media servers wirelessly
- Mass Storage and software sync support - you can drag and drop files or use WMP, WMC, TVersity, etc. to sync your files
- Native support in Windows 7; it will show up in Devices and Printers as a Zen X-Fi, no external driver needed, with full connectivity
- Audio quality is quite superior to the iPod Touch in my opinion. Zune HD is higher on the scale, but does not have the external speaker
- Lots of memory AND an SD card slot to go even higher

=- What the Zen X-Fi Does WRONG -=

- The included earbuds look fantastic but sound horrific. I mean, they sound worse than the built-in speaker. That's sad.
- No apparent support for shuffle play within a genre. For example, if I select a genre, it won't allow me to play songs in random order, only alphabetically.
- No backlight. The front interface seems to scream for it, yet it is not here.
- Button placement is rather haphazard. Play/Pause is on the bottom right - no problems there, but then navigation buttons are an odd array of 9 metal buttons with no markings to tell you what they do or how to use them. When you navigate you're using the center crosshair buttons, and if you're in the dark, you have to "feel" it out. Very annoying. Also, when trying to type something in, you have to use these same navigation buttons, and instead of a cellphone-like manner, they're...I can't describe it. Trust me that it's uncomfortable.
- Navigation buttons are a tad bit hard to press. I don't know why they didn't make them clear acrylic like the other four music buttons.
- Album art won't show up unless you sync with software (i.e. you can't drag and drop). This is a bit troubling, since the artist/song information doesn't change either way. That the device is not smart enough to go get it at the time you drag and drop it, seems like a very small thing that was overlooked. For the record, I drag and drop because it's faster than sync, plus I'm not then held hostage to that software if I need to make changes to my musical makeup.
- Videos require sync (you can use Windows 7, doesn't have to be Creative's software, but still), even though their native formats (WMV, MP4, MPG) are supported by the device. Why can't I just drag and drop them?? The sync takes 5 times as long to complete! I mean I love that it's got so many formats it supports and all, but it really should support drag and drop all the way around. Seriously. I don't even use the feature and this is the primary reason why - too much hassle.
- No included wall charger. At all. You have to charge on a computer or buy a charger. I *think* a mini USB charger like the one for the BlackBerry Pearl might work, but I've never tried it.

So...do I recommend it? At its current price it is definitely a solid product...but it does have issues. For someone who only needs to be able to play music it's light years ahead of the competition. IF you're the kind of person who is a 24-hour device head, get the iPod Touch. If you're the kind of person who wants to sync his media with his computer and his 360, get the Zune HD. The Creative Zen X-Fi is a 5 star music player, a 4 star device, and that's what this review is trying to tell you.

Archos 604 30 GB Portable Media Player - Refurbished (Silver) Customer Review

I bought this because I was on a bit of a financial shoestring. Though I must admit I was a bit afraid of buying a refurbished product. Amazon has always done right by me so that helped eased my tension. When my creative zen vision 30 froze and I could not get it fixed Amazon refunded my money with no problem or hesitation. Well I just got the Archos today the main reason why I bought it was because of the price and the fact that it was not a creative zen, a microsoft zune or an apple ipod. I would love to buy another creative product put they seem stuck on the 32 gb situation and if I buy something new I want it to have a bigger space to allow my music/videos to sprawl. Now I know I bought the 30 gb Archos so I actually lost 2 gb of space. However this is a test prodcut for me to see if I would want to buy a more expensive Archos later on down the road. At first I had some difficulty understanding it. This item came with no instructions or cd whatsoever. Not even the quick that gives basic diagrams for the technilogically challenged like me. So I just went ahead and plugged it in. My operation system automatically took care of it and the Archos booted up. However I had to put up the charging function, media function and harddrive function all seperately for some reason.
I kept trying to sync it using the media function and nothing would happen. So I switched it over to the harddrive and just right clicked on my mouse and sent it to the Archos. I really do miss creative vision compression technology. I have not had any difficulty so far but will keep an eye on the unit.
On the downside though it is huge I was hoping for something I can put in my pocket and carry along with me at times but will have to wait and see how portable this thing actually is.

Thanks Amazon you guys rock.
Paul

Archos 705 Wi-Fi Portable Media Player (80 GB) Customer Review

I like my Archos, but I don't like the terribad battery life. I love the storage capacity of this beast - I don't like the mediocre volume it puts out. The touchscreen IS easy enough to use with your fingers (despite what a few others have said in reviews) if you use the tip of your finger or the back of your nail. I don't keep up with a stylus well, so i just use the back of my index nail and it works just fine.

The picture isn't bad at all; if the battery life wasn't a joke it would make a great travel companion (which is why I bought it) to take instead of a laptop. As it stands now I have to find a power outlet after almost every 2 hours to give it some juice (when watching movies). I get about 8 hours of music out of it, which isn't terrible, until you look at the amount of time it should last.

The worst part about it is that the WiFi feature (using an Opera browser) is so slow you'd almost do better on an actual computer with dialup. I don't even use this feature even though I paid the extra for the capability.

The best part? This baby plays almost any file type you put on it.
I gave it a 4 star because there isn't a 3.5 star rating.

Archos 5 160 GB Internet Tablet with Android Customer Review

There is one sure fire way you can guarantee to reduce your technology options, and that is to irresponsibly slam everything that's not an Apple product. There are companies out there, (like Archos), that are trying to give you options. It's not easy to do. It takes a lot of money, and there will inevitably be hiccups and bugs. But people are so spoiled and impatient these days, they are willing to sell their souls to one company for a few pieces of MAC crack. Their loss.

Now to the Archos: I purchased the original Archos 5 a couple weeks ago, and while I found that device intriguing, the fact it used a hard drive (250GB) for storage, and made unsettling clicks and pops from time to time, made me paranoid enough to return it and order the FLASH Memory 32GB Android version instead. Also, the Opera browser on the older unit did reset often while surfing for no apparent reason. But it did work, and in full screen mode...and I could play my videos FROM my computer which my wife's Itouch couldn't...well, touch. It did everything her's did, just not as well. In fact, using it as a book reader was pretty much a joke. The biggest shortfall was the way fonts were rendered in every application. They just looked cruddy compared to the Itouch.

Well, I scoured reviews from all over the web to see if I could find a comparison between the old and new Archos from someone who owned both. I couldn't really, and what little I did find in comparison went pretty much like, "The new Android is OK, but not so much different from the first version in the end"

Now I know there are those like me out there that want to know if the upgrade is worth it.

Listen up. This is like the jump from a Yugo to a Cadillac. This device rocks! If I were to rate the original, I'd give it a "3"...this one gets an "8"

The web browsing experience is probably the most shocking. I have never seen a full sized computer load and display web pages faster. The rendering is beautiful. Ever bit as crisp and lovely as the Ipod. All in full screen spender! The scroll is not quite as fluid as the Ipod, but Archos is almost there. The sheer amount of additional real estate makes up for anything else.

Bottom line: Archos brought the web browser light years ahead from the previous model.

Media: (Video, Music, Photos) are all pretty much unchanged and for good reason: They were fine the way they were.

Bottom line: Media experience is the same as it was. Nice music player, nice photo viewer, and by far the most awesome video playback no one, not Apple, not Microsoft, not anyone can match.

Touch Screen: Many people seem to have a lot of complaints about the resistive touch screen. Yes, it takes a little more pressure than the Ipod's capacitive screen, but I know people that have complained of those screens getting less responsive over time. The Archos screen is fine after you learn how to use it (and really, even before) Women will love it because it works especially well and is perfectly suited to using a fingernail where capcitive may not work as well via that method.

Applications: This is where Archos with Android is I guarantee you making Apple very nervous. Are they there yet? No. Are they gaining fast? You bet. Every day more apps appear.

Bottom line: There's a new kid in town. A bigger, better looking, and soon to be better all around, kid.

Other features like FM receiver (Pod don't got it) FM transmitter (Pod don't got it) GPS! (guess what? Pod don't got it) and I could go on and on about what my wife's Ipod CANT do that the Archos can.

Darn, but it hangs occasionally, or maybe a screen will freeze once in a while. Get the torches!!! Burn them out!!!! Archos must die!!!! We demand PERFECTION!!!!

If I had a nickle for every time EVERY ONE of you people's computers hung or froze or what not. Why aren't you throwing THEM in the trash? Huh?

I am not in love with Archos, nor do I hate Apple. The Itouch is a very classy machine that does what it does just about as well as it can be done. But it is not without it's faults. You don't really own it, Apple does. Why can't you see it like a hard drive? Why do I have to have their software on my computer to use it? Why have they banned Flash? Why do they mess with your legally purchased music and lock it down like it's in Fort Knox?

I feel like Archos sold me their device and by doing so signed ownership over to me. They don't restrict what I can do with it. They don't tell me to load anything on my computer to use it. They offer an infinitely more versatile device. Yes, with that sort of versatility and complexity there are bound to be snags. They are working on them.

Archos 5 was the crude foundation.

Archos 5 Android is the real deal.

Archos 705 Wi-Fi Portable Media Player (160 GB) Customer Review
