Are Radar Jammers Worth the Price to Pay?

For most people, driving the speed limit is just common sense. The safer you drive, the less likely you are to be in an accident. Unfortunately, not everyone feels that way. There are, and will always be, a select group of people who forget that highways are not international speedways.

For these people, avoiding a speeding ticket can be tricky. With the use of radar jammers, however, it is becoming increasingly common for them to avoid being caught. A radar detector jammer scrambles the signals emitted from detector radar devices, allowing the speeder to get away.

Radar jammers, as the name signifies, are compact devices used primarily to scramble detector radar signals, particularly those emanating from speed guns used by policemen. Now that you know, you'll probably ask, "Are they legal?" While purchase of a radar detector jammer is permissible by law, the now amended Communications Act of 1934 clearly stipulates that intentional use of a radar detector jammer will be construed as malicious interference.

Contravention of these laws can invite heavy fines and/or imprisonment. Before investing in a radar jamming unit, it would be advisable to first check state laws governing their ownership and use, as well as the models and types permitted. There are basically two types of car radar jamming devices available; active and passive.

Several models are available with approximately 90% of the models falling within the latter category. Active jammers constitute a mere 10%; however, it is important to note that this type is considered illegal by the US federal government since December 1997.

Since radar jammers are purchased for the purpose of avoiding a speeding ticket, it would only make sense that marketing and advertisements would try to emphasize their effectiveness. What they fail to mention, however, is that passive radar jamming units are only effective within about 100 feet from the speed gun.

Since most people are much farther away when their speeds are recorded, these models are just shy of useless. Illegal active devices are much more effective in preventing your speed from being detected; however, the result can easily be jail time and/or hefty fines, when the unit is discovered. Both active and passive radar detector jammer units can be purchased in today's market, especially online. Active jammers come with hefty price tags, sometimes exceeding $1,500.

So how are police fighting back against this technology? Many policemen and state patrol are now able to detect when radar jammers are being used, and are able to pull a driver over for this. Additionally, the speed guns used nowadays are extremely advanced and much more difficult to jam. For most, testing their unit's effectiveness by speeding past a state patrolman probably doesn't seem like the wisest option.

Maybe it was the people who bought the WiFi 605 upon its initial release that ran into a lot of trouble with bugs and support. However, I have had the item now for 2 months, and have been expecting a nightmare. All I have seen from the device is great. I also contacted support and reached a human within a reasonable amount of time on both ocassions. I am VERY HAPPY with my unit, and am buying more accessories for it. My only complaint is that there are software options that should be included, like a web browser. However, the rest of the unit is great value for the price. You get a portable music/video player that beats the iPod in many ways. You get a Tivo. You get a nice amount of storage to carry all your critical files. With a reasonable amount of money you get a GPS and a video camera. Ifu bought all those devices separatly you can easily spend four times the money. My regret is not getting the 160 gb version, as I am now in the process of ripping all of my DVDs to DivX or Xvid so I can carry them with me wherever I go along with my full music library. Lets see an iPhone do that for this price!!!!!!!! Oh, yeah....I almost forgot. As a photographer I always need a portable hard drive to dump all my photos on while on an outdoor shoot. Yes, the Archos supports Camera RAW with its crisp screen for you to clear your card and then browse through the photos on that great screen!!!!

This is probably the most outstanding product I have ever purchased!

A great gizmo to have on long trips, watch your movies, listen to music, show people your pictures.

I can cut a dvd to a 1Gb file and play it at original quality on any tv with the a/v-out cables that I bought, also.

Smaller movie files are good if you just want to watch them on the player at about 250Mb each.

Only downside is that it does not support MP 4, only AVI, and WMV for movies.

Battery life is about 4 hours per charge so you may want to get the cigarette lighter charger for a car.

This Product is absolutely fab darlings! I've just recently bought my Archos and have had it now for about a month and am enjoying every inch of it. All the great things about it have been mentioned in the other reviews, but the thing that I just went ga-ga for is not having to pay to put movies on this thing. Also, I'm not a big fan of the questionable things we view in movies; every now and then I'd just like to watch a wholesome movie not tainted with drugs, sex, profanity, and violence. So when I'm recording movies on my Archos I like to do what movie makers call, "jump cuts," where I pause the recording when a scene in a movie comes up that I don't care for viewing, and resume recording when its over. So when I finally watch the movie, any contents I didn't want in it won't be. How cool is that?! Works out great with the kiddies.

The Archos doesn't hurt your pockets either. Again, as was mentioned before, its reasonably priced for all the things you can do with it unlike the ipod. Its funny cause each time I buy a media player or MP3 player I compare them to those rinky dink iPods, but they can never measure up. You buy an iPod for this price you get music, videos, and pictures. You by the Archos you get movies, TV shows, music, photos, digital camera connection capability, PDF capability (my favorite), audio recording (also my favorite), TV playback with the DVR dock station, or all these tarveling with the DVR Travel Dock. Is that a Steal or what?

The only things I didn't like about the Archos 604, which wasn't enough to make me get rid of it or not purchase it, is the fact that the buttons don't light up(making it hard to navigate at night or if you just happen to be in a dark area; this can be remedied by buying the Archos' with the touch screens), and it didn't have an FM tunner(not that it really needs this feature, but it couldn't hurt.).

I Compared the Archos to the Zen that I have by Creative. And I must say, although they're both great buys, I use my Archos the most. I don't see why more people don't use these as opposed to the iPod. And if it appears right now that I'm abasing ipod, I'm not. They're just not the better buy.

DVR Station for Gen 5 is great "Once you buy the program from ARCHOS", which is not included with hardware. It can record from from a TV, DVD, RGB (not the new HDMI, which shouldn't matter as the resolution is great, even if you shoot it back to the Tv from the device, rips to around 1GB for a 2 1/2 hr movie). Again it rips any movie you plug into it, it does coem with a fat remote the size of your palm of your hand, still trying to figure how it works. You can move the rip movie over to your system.
You stil lhave to purchase the correct adapter for your Archos unit to sit on the DVR for a snug fit..

The Noreve case is the way to go for the larger Archos 605 incarnations. It's a solid case with leather around it, providing style and protection. It has it's own built in kick-stand, stylus slot, and adequate cut out openings for the various connections. My only complaint is that it looks a lot like a woman's wallet, which as a man isn't something I necessarily want, but it serves its function well and is much, much better then the provided soft case from Archos. I would strongly recommend this to anyone looking for a little more substantial protection for their investment.

El Archos 5 resulta ser el mejor reproductor portatil que he probado hasta la fecha. Adicionalmente, tambien tenga la base para el archos. Mis impresiones son las siguientes:

Pros:

- Gran capacidad de almacenaje. Todos mis videos ya los tengo en el Archos y me olvide de CD, DVD y perder espacio en el PC almacenando los videos.
- Capacidad de reproduccion de multiples formatos de audio y video: MP3, AAC, DIVX, XVID, H.264, VOB, WAV,
- Facilidad de uso y navegaci{on
- Capacidades de borrar, mover de carpetas, renombrar, buscar archivos directamente en el Archos, tanto para archivos de datos como de audio y video
- La pantalla y la calidad de imagen son realmente asombrosas
- Puede leer subtitulos de los videos y los muestra en un tamaño perfectamente visible y entendible. Hay dos tamaños de letra dispoonibles.
- Puede leer sin dificultad archivos PDF.
- La calidad de audio es excelente (siempre que se usen unos buenos audifonos, los que vienen con el producto son terrilemente malos)
- Las fotografias se ven muy ien y el zoom funciona esplendidamente. Las fotos se pueden rotar facilmente mientras se ven en la pantalla.
- Las fotografias se pueden reproducir automaticamnete como en una presentacion mientras se tiene musica de fondo
- El parlante incorporado se escucha bien y con claridad. Suficiente para ver una pelicula.
- La base del Archos convierte este reproductor portatil en un completo centro multimedia.
- La base puede reproducir el video a traves de salidas RCA de video compuesto, video componente, S-video y HDMI
- La configuracion del Archos es sencilla para establecer el tipo de salida a ser utilizada, formato de imagen del TV, NTSC o PAL, etc.
- Tiene capacidad de mandar audio analogico estereo o digital (multicanal) via un conector RCA para SPDIF
- El control remoto permite administrar el dispositivo de manera completa. Si disponen de un control Harmony, este control tambien puede ser configurado para manejar el Archos sin ningun problema.
- La calidad del video en el TV es asombrosa. A pesar de esto, cuando se muestra el menu del Archos, aparecen distorciones en la pantalla de la TV que no se ven durante la reproduccion de una pelicula.

Contras:
- Es un equipo costoso y adicionalmente hay que comprar los codec para AC3, AAC y H.264. Me parece que por el precio, estos codec deberian estar incluidos.
- Es un poco pesado y grande para muchas aplicaciones cotidianas. Yo lo he tilizado para trotar pero realmente no es muy comodo. Rodando bicicleta o en la montaña es espectacular, pues es mas facil buscarle un acomodo. Muchas veces lo llevo en el bolsillo de mi pantalon sin ningun problema, pero no en todos los pantalones se puede llevar.
- No tiene Bluetooth. Seria un gran valor agregado si contara con esta conexion.
- Los audifonos incorporados son realmente malos. Tanto la calidad de audiocomo la calidad de construccion son deficientes. Es fundamental contar con unos buenos audifonos. Yo utilizo los Sennheiser CX380 Sport. Es increible la diferencia en la calidad del sonido.
- No soporta JAVA. Hoy en dia todos los dispositivos portatiles soportan JAVA y existen multiples aplicaciones que podrian utilizarse en un dispositivo como este.
- El Wi Fi es poco sensible y debe contar con buenos niveles de señal para que se pueda conectar. La conexion se pierde en lugares donde otros dispositivos aun tendrian conexion, aunque de muy baja velocidad.

En definitiva, este equipo cumple y supera las espectativas para las que fue diseñado. No es un equipo recomendable para todo uso (para correr es preferible un equipo muy pequeño), y quien lo compra debe estar claro en el uso que quiere darle. Yo lo uso para ver peliculas en el TV, ver peliculas en viajes largos y escuchar musica en el dia a dia.
