Before we proceed further, we should mention that the Archos 7 is not a replacement model for the very popular Archos 605 player that is mainly a portable media (mp3 and video) player. While sporting many of the features of a portable media player, the new Archos 7 is also a very competent internet device.
From the looks of its features, the new Archos 7 can be considered a formidable alternative to the legendary iPod touch. One of the most noteworthy features is its huge 7" TFT touch-screen. The huge screen elevates the experience of surfing the net and viewing videos on a portable device. To top it up, the screen is actually a HD display, capable of playing videos at 720p (like those on HD LCD TVs).
Although the iPod Touch is a very impressive device, lets face it, the experience of viewing videos and surfing the net on it is similar to performing those tasks on a cell phone. For that reason, the Archos 7 plans to provide consumers with a 'true' portable media player. Another impressive feature on this new device is that it can surf the net through wi-fi and 3G (and even 3.5G) networks. This is a big step up from conventional devices of its class.
Despite its seize, the Archos 7 remains very portable, measuring at 7.5 x 0.6 x 4.3 inches in dimensions and 1.4 pounds in weight. It has a bronze/brown exterior casing that looks really stylish. The video playback on this device was very good and the touch-screen was much more responsive than the older models. At the time this article was written, the device retails from around $240 each.

Hi!
Bought two of these for the kids along with a dual USB car charger. OK, it is far from an iPod, especially the UI and the feeling of quality. But it quickly plays all the DVDs I ripped for my kids and works nicely for long trips. If it breaks, well, 119 USD is not the end of the world. I have no time to convert all of my media for a single format device.
Support is also good. I called them about a unit I thought was bricked on delivery. I just got an error 102 "recovery mode". The nice support staff simply told me to hold the power and tv buttons down and copy the new firmware manually and everything worked. I was worried it was corrupt memory, but it was simply crappy software.
Because of the Archos's USB 2.0 compatibility, a variety of different media files can be quickly transferred to the device. Charging the device can also be accomplished with an active USB connection. Other great features include mass storage capabilities, automatic firmware downloads, and a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. With an advanced Li-Poly battery, the player supports up to 16 hours of continuous music playback and 5 hours of continuous video playback. Weighing in at a scant 4.2 ounces, the Archos generation 5 405 measures 3.9 by 3.07 by 0.5 inches.

I bought the Zen Vision M 30Gb to show videos in class where I teach. Its functionality, price and ease of use proved to me yet again how marketing overwhelms everything in contemporary America! At well under half the price for similar devices that don't do half as much or have a quarter of the memory, this device held, converted and played all types of vids via an a/v hookup to my tv at home and the projection-style media set-up at my campus. The fact that it also has an FM radio, plays music files, stores pics and other types of data, and comes with good support software makes it far superior to things like the iPod and other devices. Yet even hard-core techies at my job have never heard of it, Creative Zen or knew that many features could be had for the price I paid. Prisoners of the marketers! No matter; their ignorance and willful adaption to advertising hype helps keep great products like this a real bargin.
The Zen Vision:M has the features, ease-of-use, and power to become your constant media companion. See the Vison:M interactive demo. |
Creative takes a somewhat different approach with the Vision:M's controls, answering the iPod's Click Wheel with a vertical touch pad--which allows you to scroll up and down menus and control volume--plus four buttons that offer navigation through the user interface. The contextual menu button on the bottom right is a welcome addition, allowing you to make quick settings changes and view information about media files on the fly--functions that are more cumbersome on an iPod. Creative could have made the buttons a bit more sensitive--they require a firm press that gives an overall feeling of clunkiness to an otherwise well-designed user interface. Another annoyance is the touch pad's over-sensitivity; it's easy to make selections unintentionally, sending you on a wild ride through the user interface.
The Vision:M's screen, which measures 2.5 inches diagonally, offers sharp details, vibrant color, and excellent response with little or no video ghosting during high-action sequences. The 320 x 240 resolution is to be expected from a device this size, and although it's small, you'll likely have no trouble enjoying video while you're sitting on the subway or a flight, or in the back-seat of a car. Our only nitpick was the screen's less than stellar viewing angle, especially when compared side-by-side with a video iPod. While this can be good for maintaining privacy, the narrow viewing angle also means that friends beside you will struggle to see anything other than a black screen.
Playback of Windows Media DRM'd video files (WMV9) was also hassle-free. Purchased videos delivered crisp colors and detail, with no frame drops. Video playback consumes a lot of power, bringing Creative's claim of four hours of video playback into serious doubt. Expect under three hours when watching videos continuously. Thankfully, if you need to come back to your video later the Vision:M's software remembers the timecode of where you left off--unless you power the device down between viewing sessions. In addition to protected and unprotected WMV files, the Vision:M can play MPEG 1/2/4, Motion-JPEG, DivX 4 and 5, and XviD formats, making it a very flexible device with respect to encoding options.
The Vision:M can also store thousands of photos, letting you browse through them or set up a slideshow. The device's TV-out option comes in handy here, as you can present slideshows on a TV or projector. Videos can be displayed this way, too. An FM radio with easy preset tuning functions and great signal reception, plus a voice recorder feature, round out the extra media features. There's also a handy application on the Vision:M that formats a portion of the drive for use as USB 2.0 mass storage, letting you set aside up to 16 GB for data storage.
Connectivity and Synchronization
A Creative Sync Adapter ships in the box with the Vision:M, making it a snap to connect the device to a USB 2.0-capable PC. With the connection made, Windows XP recognized the device right off the bat and Windows Media Player immediately asked us if we wanted to load the PC's music onto the Vision:M. Music management and synchronization has come a long way on the PC, and the experience of organizing and transferring music to and from the Vision:M was, barring a few curious click-through boxes, pretty seamless. The Vision:M also supports synchronization of your Outlook contacts, calendar, and tasks, in case you want to use it as a personal organizer of sorts.
Amazon Unbox Integration
To be truly successful, the Vision:M has to be more than a great media device, it has to integrate with Amazon Unbox and make the process feel like second nature. Although the Vision:M was tested using a beta version of Amazon Unbox, things are looking good already. Amazon Unbox and the Vision:M go together like peas in a pod, making the process of purchasing, downloading, and enjoying content on the go a real cinch. The Amazon Unbox Video Player, which queues, downloads, organizes, and plays your purchased movies and TV shows, recognized the Vision:M right off the bat. An icon for the Vision:M appears in the devices panel of the application, and you can immediately begin transferring downloaded content to the device. Once you're all loaded up, the Vision:M offers a great way to bring Amazon Unbox entertainment along for the ride.
Pros
The Zen Vision:M can hold thousands of songs, photos, and movies in its 30 GB memory. View larger. See the Zen Vision:M in 3D. |
You can also connect the Zen Vision:M to a projector or TV with the included AV cable, and put on a big show from this little device. Synchronize music files with photo or video montages for a taste of spectacular, personalized big screen magic. Viewing images on this device is a pleasant experience. The 2.5-inch, high definition LCD screen features a 320x240 resolution and hundreds of thousands of colors. What this means is you see crisp, clear detail in every movie and photo, even under bright light.
Creative didn't scrimp on design, either. The Zen Vision:M features an ergonomic design with an innovative touch pad control that enables quick, comfortable access to menus and settings. And you'll get loads more playback time with the built-in rechargeable, battery. Enjoy up to 13 hours of music or 4.5 hours of movies on a single charge. The optional extended-life battery pack lets you double playback time, so you can enjoy days of uninterrupted entertainment. Other features include a personal organizer that you sync with Microsoft Outlook, and an integrated voice recorder that can store hundreds of hours worth of recordings. Take a closer look at all the Zen Vision:M features.
The Zen Vision:M MP3 and Video Player uses PlaysForSure technology. Look for the PlaysForSure logo if you're shopping for a portable music or video device and you want to make sure the digital music and video you purchase will play back on it every time. Match the PlaysForSure logo on a large selection of leading devices and online music stores. If you see the logo, you'll know your digital music will play for sure. Choose from a large number of digital music and video stores, including MTV's Urge, Rhapsody, Yahoo!, MSN Music, MusicMatch, MusicNow, Napster, Wal-Mart Music Downloads, and many more.
What's in the Box
Creative Zen Vision:M, earphones, sync adapter, USB 2.0 adapter, pouch, user's guide, and installation CD. Note: As of July 2006 Creative no longer ships the Zen M with the AC power adapter.

I already owned an older Archos Av500 and I really liked the durability of this product. I had it for several years and it never failed on me. I traveled with it nearly every where I went and it held up. I used it for the video, sounds, recording TV, video recording, etc.
Now for the new device - Archos 5 ( I LOVE IT ) It has all the same features as the old but with touch screen, WI-FI, Web access, Email and a host of other features. When you think to buy a portable media device, you should go for the one, which is undoubtedly the number one brand in the market and that is Apple iPod. They are one of the best media device manufacturers but it is not always the case. There are many other leading companies, which offer and share the same features and price as does Apple iPod offers. Just take the example of Gen 5 line up of the Archos mp3 player. It is one of the best media player, one can ever have. There are many positive features of this player and one can never repent on his choice of purchase Archos player.
There are many qualities of Archos mp3 player. It distinguishes from other players due to its 80GB storage space. You can upload your whole collection onto 605 Wifi and still you will have empty space to use. In this unit, you can have other software built in like .mp3 and .wav. You can listen all types of songs in it due to multiple softwares, which are already built in the player.
It has an attractive touch screen with high color quality 4 inches, which can be operated by your one touch. You can navigate its menu simply. The Archos mp3 player is also distinguished from other media devices from its high-resolution screen where you can enjoy watching TV shows and surfing on Internet and You Tube videos. You can check your corporate emails wherever you go. You don't need to stick on computer in the office for your work. It becomes very easy with iPod to do your business everywhere due to its trouble-free WiFi connection. So you do not need to buy any other player if Gen 5 Archos Mp3 player is easily available to you.
In a world filled with MP3 Players, Portable Media Players and music downloads, there are a few of us who are still somewhat confused about how to buy a MP 3 player. With so much information out there it's hard to get past all of the fancy, high tech jargon to make a decision on which one is best for your needs and by the end of your search, you're even more confused than before you started. Well here's a "straight to the point, quick and dirty" lesson on how to buy an MP3 player.
MP3 PLAYER VS PORTABLE MEDIA PLAYER
A MP3 Player is a portable digital device that plays and stores music and audio books. A Portable Media Player (PMP) plays and stores audio and video. The name MP3 Player is used as a generic term to describe all portable devices. Although PMPs can play audio not all MP3 Players can play video. For example, the iPod Shuffle, Creative Labs Zen Stone and SanDisk Sansa Clip are MP3 Players and do not have the capability to play video.
BRANDS
For those of you who were not aware, Apple iPod is not the only brand of MP3 Players on the market. There are several other brands of MP3 Players for you to choose depending on your needs and most importantly, your budget. They are the Archos, Coby, Cowon, Creative Labs, iRiver, Philips, Samsung, SanDisk, Sony, Toshiba and Zune (Microsoft).
TYPE
MP3 Players are classified according to how they store digital data. The most common are HARD DRIVE BASED PLAYERS and FLASH MEMORY BASED PLAYERS. The Hard Drive Based MP3 Players have the highest capacity and are larger and heavier than the Flash Memory Based MP3 Players. An example of a HARD DRIVE BASED PLAYER would be the iPod Classic 80 GB, iPod Classic 120 GB, iPod Classic 160 GB, Zune 120 GB, the Archos 80 GB 605 Wi-Fi PMP, Archos 160 GB 605 Wi-Fi PMP and the Creative Labs Zen Vision:M 30 GB MP3 and Video Player. A drawback to the HARD DRIVE BASED PLAYERS is that it has moving parts that can easily malfunction if it is exposed to high temperatures or dropped. The Flash Memory Based MP3 Players are light weight and smaller than the Hard Drive Based MP3 Players. This type of MP3 Player has no moving parts and will have longer audio playback with a storage capacity ranging from 120 to 8000 songs. An example of Flash Memory Based MP3 Players is the Apple iPod Touch, Apple iPod Nano or Creative Labs Zen PMP. A drawback of the Flash Memory Based MP3 Player is that it is more expensive than the Hard Drive Based Players even if the storage capacity is less.
CHOOSING A MP3 PLAYER OR PMP
Now that you're armed with the basic information you have to determine which type is best for you. Your personal needs and budget will help you to narrow down your choice.
Decide the type. - Hard Drive vs Flash Memory. When deciding the type keep in mind what you're using it for. For example, if you're going to use it while jogging, then the hard drive based player will not be a good choice because of the size, weight and high chance it will malfunction if it's dropped.
Decide the storage capacity. - When deciding the storage capacity also keep in mind whether you also want to play video and audio (PMP) or just audio (MP3 Player). MP3 Players can come in various storage capacities which can vary by brand. The iRiver brands features a 20 GB MP3 Player. The Archos has a PMP that has 60 GB capacity. Whether you're looking for 1 GB to 160 GB there is a brand and model to suit your needs.
Decide the features. - Determining features is based on personal preference. Some MP3 Players/PMP have several features that may include voice recorders, calendar syncing, FM radio, wireless capability, photo storage or recording TV like a DVR player. For these particular features you may want to consider the Archos brand of PMPs. Another popular feature is color. If you're into pink then you can get a pink mp3 player. Your options are endless it just depends on your personal needs and how much you're willing to spend.
Decide how much you're willing to spend. - The more features you desire the more you'll spend on a MP3 Player. If you're just looking to play music and you're not concerned about the fancy features then you can find a MP3 player for under $50. For example, the SanDisk Sansa m250 2GB can be purchased for less that $35. If you're looking for at least 4GB then iPod Nano or Creative Labs Zen Mosaic would be a good choice. Or, if price isn't a concern and you want the "Cadillac" MP3 Player with all the bells and whistles then consider the Archos 705 Wi-Fi PMP 160 GB. After considering the type, capacity, features and your budget check out each of the above mentioned brands to compare features and price. Also, if you're on a tight budget and still want fun features consider a refurbished MP3 Player. Now you're informed and ready to buy and enjoy your new MP3 Player! Good Luck!

I've owned my archos for about 5 months now and ithas lived up to what it was made for. Wifi works great, I enjoy having both the touch screen and the side buttons, video quality is outstanding. The main reason I bought the 605 was to listen to music, but getting the web browser/internet radio and tv plug-ins really improved the device. The sound quality is above par but not outstanding. It's much better with the proper equalizer settings (very nice touch) and good quality headphones. The versatility is great, you can have it be an MTP device when connecting to your computer, or just be read as an external hard drive. I like that it is linux-based but it isn't truly open source. I like that it plays flash games (somewhat slowly I might add) and that the Opera browser has nice widgets that work pretty well, but if it was open source then it would truly be a huge step up from the itouch. The stylus that comes with it is overall a good stylus but there's nowhere to put it. It is useful when surfing the web but I don't want to have to take it with me in the hopes that I'll get into a wifi hot spot. Since the device does have a touch screen, I was hoping that the interface would be a little more touchscreen friendly. It works well, but it could be a lot better by making the folders bigger and therefor easier to access via touchscreen. I haven't been able to experiment a lot with the browser (I just set up wifi in my home yesterday) but I can tell that my overall experience with the 605 will be enhanced. One of my favorite things at the moment about this device is the internet radio. It is well supported and has superb stations. I would recommend this product to anyone as an alternative to the itouch...but not for 0. I got mine at a really great price (around 0 I think) and it is well worth it but Amazon seems to have bumped up the price to 0, which isn't worth it (I don't think any mp3 player is worth 0 honestly). Overall, great product and highly recommended.
To help round out the player's multimedia superiority, the Archos even comes with photo viewing capabilities. JPEG, BMP, and PNG files are 100 percent compatible with the player, and the player can pull up PDFs for portable review -- an ideal means to take bigger documents or e-books in PDF format on the road with you. Because of the Archos's USB 2.0 compatibility, files can be quickly transferred to the device in the absence of a Wi-Fi network connection. Charging the device can also be accomplished with an active USB connection. An AC adapter is sold separately for additional charging options. Other great features include mass storage capabilities, automatic firmware downloads, and a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. With an advanced Li-Poly battery, the player supports up to 17 hours of continuous music playback and 5.5 hours of continuous video playback. Weighing in at a scant 9.17 ounces, the Archos generation 5 605 measures 4.8 by 3.2 by 0.6 inches.
New widgets for the Archos 605 include a calculator, currency converter, unit converter, news, and weather (above) as well as a note writer and data vault (below). |
To be able to use the widgets, you need to purchase the Web Browser plug-in (about ). Then, you can download the free widget pack via Archos.com.

Why go for them?
For any data processing network, opting for 10 gigabit Ethernet switches becomes compulsory when the existing and older Ethernet switches such as gigabit Ethernet or fast gigabit switches start showing uninspiring speed while data work is on. 10 gigabit Ethernets are more productive and as per their nomenclature, they move data with a speed of 10 gigabits/second.
10 gigabit Ethernet switches are always equipped with multicast support and entertain 802.1X authentication. They are much more secure than the other types of Ethernets and are protected against denial-of-service attacks.
Thus they have become a number one choice not only in local area networks, but they are greatly compatible with wide area networks and metropolitan area networks too. 10 gigabit Ethernets are very much similar in many cases to the other types of Ethernets such as gigabit Ethernets or fast Ethernets.
So what are 10 gigabit Ethernet switches?
Being described as "disruptive" communication equipment by many, 10 gigabit Ethernet switches are a type of telecommunication technology which are capable of speeding up the data transfer rate to an incredible rate of up to more than 10 billion bits/second in LANs( local area networks).
10 gigabit Ethernets are the most improved version of Ethernet technology so far as they are comprehensively efficient and user-friendly as compared to other types of Ethernet switches available so far. The replacement of other networks used in various data centers by 10 gigabit Ethernet brings a sea like change in the data transfer rate from almost 2-3 gigabits/second to 10 gigabits/second.
So what about their cost-effectiveness?
Being highly inexpensive, these switches are a first choice for all the local area networks worldwide. Since they first came to the fore in 2001, when the installation of these switches was worth Us $35-40,000, they evolved successfully into one of the cheapest networking products. These days, they can be found at as below as US $3-4,000.
Then tell me something about their future too!
Though, 10 gigabit Ethernet switches are more than sufficient to transfer data at a high pace, the users and manufactures have set a goal to come up with something more powerful and accelerated. They hope to launch Ethernet switches 8-10 times more efficient than these modern 10 gigabit switches.

What do you look for in a good multi-media player?
As the name suggests, it should be capable of accessing various media, for our entertainment and information. These include audio, and video media, as well as the Internet. The other tasks a multimedia player should be able to perform include displaying digital photos, and recording and playing back of audio and video content.
A good multimedia player should not use much processing power and deliver playback of the highest quality. Using a multimedia player one should be able to use different kind of files. Some of the popular file formats include wav, mp3, avi, DVD, midi, mid, mpeg and mpg files. We also look for other features like the ability to change from normal screen to full screen mode, a play-list, auto replay, slow motion, a good interface, and more.
How fast the player loads and unloads can make a difference to your multimedia experience. Another question to ask is whether the hard drive is large enough to store your collection of movies, or MP3 music files, or an album of photos. Also, how useful is the player when you use it on the go, on a vacation, or while traveling for business?
Archos 604, which comes in two variants, 30GB and WiFi, delivers on some of the above counts, and has a few limitations with respect to the others.
For instance, it can be used as a digital video recorder, and can record from television and other devices. Also, with a dock control, you can play back video on any television, or on the in-built screen. (Audio can similarly be played on your home or car stereo.) Those who look for full-screen mode on the device may be disappointed with the screen size.
Also play back is not possible in some popular formats.
The memory of 30GB can hold over 100 hours of movies, which are stored in MPeG-4 compressed format. People with large collections of movies, music and photographs may find the memory size a bit small for comfort, especially as the 605 model comes with a 160GB memory.
On the go usage as a camcorder is possible only if you buy the WiFi variant which has a special helmet accessory, for the purpose. WiFi also allows the player to access the Internet for audio and video files.
All in all, although this multimedia player is becoming popular with audio and video lovers, it could have performed better, in some areas.
